Process
A glimpse into my method for options 1 and 2. Option 3 has a different process once I get past step 1.
To create a great portrait, it’s very important to get a good, clear head shot. This ensures that I'm able to make the “monster” resemble you enough to be recognizable. Feel free to ham it up for the camera!
Step 1: Penciling
This is the most essential part of capturing your likeness. If the illustration doesn't look right in this stage, it most likely won't later.
Step 2: Inking
The second most important step. Mistakes at this stage are pretty hard to hide, which could mean starting over. Because you'll receive the original hand-drawn illustration as well as any color purchased, I have to make this as perfect as possible. Washes and line work are completed at this stage.
Step 3: Scanning
Because I want to provide you with a quality Monster Portrait, I scan all of my artwork on a Microtek 9800XL tabloid size scanner ... a very expensive piece of equipment.
Step 4: Applying color and texture or gray washes
This step actually has a few parts to it that can be just as time consuming as the previous steps because there are many layers of color, effects and textures that go into each Monster Portrait. Each one is done a little differently so the results are very unique.
The final steps are getting a quality print, carefully packaging up of all the pieces, trekking to the local post office, getting insurance and tracking information, and emailing that to you. |
